For supporters of LGBT rights, the election of President Obama represented an apparent historical turning point for sexual minorities in our country. As a presidential candidate, Obama had said all of the rights things: he criticized the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy (DADT); he called for the enactment of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would protect employees against sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination; and called for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

But now that almost a third of Obama's first term has gone by, there is growing despair among many of his LGBT supporters over how little the administration has accomplished on gay rights. We have been here before. Eighteen years ago many gay rights advocates celebrated the election of President Clinton, the first presidential candidate to reach out to the LGBT community, only to be disappointed by how clumsy and conflicted the new administration was in handling the gays in the military controversy.

11 Vote(s)

I watched my countrymen once again say that I am not quite human enough to deserve the same respect, dignity and rights that they enjoy.

I watched President Obama, the self-described "fierce advocate" for gay rights, very very carefully word a statement that was at best lukewarm in his support for those on the side of equality in Maine. I spoke face to face with my Congressman who looked helpless to me while he explained it would be difficult to pass the Uniting American Families Act. I still have the letter he sent me when I wrote him to ask him to co-sponsor that bill. He claimed to support it, but refused to co-sponsor.

o more will I sit back and accept your promises, your urgings to wait for equality. I'm sick of it. Stand up and get some courage. The complaints for now are mostly muted, and any damage done can be reversed.
It's not a perfect bill; if you click a few links and look at the text, it wouldn't immediately make gay marriage the law of the entire land. What it would do is entitle the federal government to recognize same-sex marriages contracted in those states and foreign countries that allow them. My college friend and her wife in Massachusetts, for instance, could get federal marriage benefits as well as state benefits, but their marriage would still probably not be recognized in Arkansas. However, the bill also recognizes foreign gay marriage, so that, say, a married Canadian couple could move to Massachusetts and still have their marriage be recognized.

The other thing I like about this bill is that it smooths a little more of the path for the Uniting American Families Act, which is a bill that would try to take care of Americans who go abroad to marry same-sex partners who are not U.S. citizens, but who then must leave the country and become permanent expatriates because the foreign marriage isn't enough to sponsor the spouse for immigration. From my interpretation of the text of this bill, it would allow these couples to move to states where gay marriage is recognized. For the record, this would be: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, and (for the moment) Maine. Possibly also New York, which does not allow gay marriage itself, but recognizes gay marriages performed out-of-state.

I find it fascinating that the legislators sponsoring this bill are from Minnesota, a state which does not currently allow gay marriage. I've never been to Minnesota, but perhaps this should change at some point in the future....

8 Vote(s)

I think the broader LGBT community forgets about looking for commonalities sometimes. Think for a moment about immigration reform; there is a whole community of immigration advocates that the LGBT community could work with to help to make same-sex/same gender partner sponsorship possible. If members in the LGBT community care about the progressive immigration reform issues, and work with the organizations that promote immigration reform, we could use our commonalities to build a stronger, more powerful coalition. The LGBT community's partner sponsor issue could become part of a broader immigration reform bill; and in the process of LGBT people working for immigration reform, our broader LGBT community issues could become immigration advocates' issues.

I'm happy to support the Uniting American Families act - the law that specifically relates to LGBT families. I won't go any past that unless and until I see the proponents of broad immigration reform step up to the plate and work toward ...

7 Vote(s)

Of the 1,138 federal rights and benefits that the LGBT community is denied, the worst (I am biased having suffered this particular form of discrimination) is the one that denies us two fundamental prerequisites to our basic freedoms and happiness:

1. The right to fall in love and live with whomever we choose from wherever we choose;
without impacting -
2. Our right to remain in our homes and Country.

On the lips of every Binational I know and I am sure on the lips of those I do not know, is "How can my Country, the United States of America, in all its glory, allow this to happen to its own citizens?" Our country is in effect causing its citizens to go into exile when "in pursuit of happiness" in flagrant disregard of our own constitution and while we are preaching human rights to the rest of the World we are so grossly at fault within.

The fight for equality under the Immigration Law in the United States, is not about the privilege for the foreigner, but rather about the RIGHT denied the American[i] same sex spouse/ partner.
"Under DOMA's Section 3 the federal government is forbidden from recognizing LGBT couples married in the six states where same-sex marriage is legal. Section 2 of the law says those states that outlaw same-sex marriages do not have to recognize legal same-sex marriages from other states. Nadler said his bill would repeal both sections of DOMA. 'We have got to repeal DOMA and have got to make sure it accomplishes for federal purposes allowing the federal government to recognize same-sex marriages,' said Nadler, who led the fight to defeat a Federal Marriage Amendment that would have enshrined the same-sex marriage ban in the U.S. Constitution. 'The time for dumping DOMA is long overdue.' HRC President Joe Solmonese said it makes sense to restrict the debate over repealing DOMA only to recognition of same-sex marriage. 'We ought to start it with what we would ultimately achieve, a wholesale overturning of DOMA,' he said. Nadler said that including domestic partnerships or civil unions in his legislation 'gets very complicated' because the laws governing such legally recognized relationships are "different in every state." Also, he said it would cloud the legislation's end goal, which is ensuring all Americans, regardless of their sexual orientation, have the right to marry."

25 Vote(s)
