Since ACT UPwe have done nothing on a mass scale to exploit the potential of passive resistance and nonviolent civil disobedience, the most effective, proven techniques of social action refined in the last century. Aside from a few rogue players who’ve applied for marriage licenses and small bands of activists like Soulforce (who’ve been arrested for trespassing on Christian college campuses where they try to instigate conversations about homosexuality), we have not even tried. When gay soldiers get kicked out of the military, why don’t they refuse to leave? Why don’t the rest of us go to support them? Why haven’t we tried?

On February 8th, 2009, I posted my feelings that “It’s Time For A National LGBT Leader” to step forth, and then again on May 30th, I posted a comment about the LGBT Community and that “Now Is The Time” for us to organize and put pressure on those who promised us the rights we deserve and are entitled.

The program continues to document the transition from a foreign country to now what is called their home – Canada, presenting the not-so-difficult process for gay migrants to migrate into this country. I am aware that gay immigration has only been briefly discussed in class. But truth be told, had I not been in this class and I had not read Brown et al’s article, I would’ve probably changed the channel that day once I read gay immigration in the synopsis of the program. I could blame this choice of action on laziness and/or ignorance. Ignorance, because the topic of gay immigration would’ve been oblivious to me and I would’ve been lazy to educate myself on what I now think is an interesting topic. I just got some updates from our policy team who have been working on the implementation of the HIV travel ban passed in Congress last year…
The regulation is out in the preview version of tomorrow’s Federal Register, which will be the start of a public comment period. Anyone can submit their thoughts on removing the ban and once the comment period is open we’ll provide you an easy opportunity to do so with a national action alert set to launch soon.
