America's Love Exiles Support the Uniting American Families Act Testimony submitted to: United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary Hearing: “The Uniting American Families Act: Addressing Inequality in Federal Immigration Law” ...
We have to be aware that we are now in a position to set the agenda. The Bush years are over. There is no longer a majority in favor of denying us our human rights. The religious right can speak out against UAFA, but they are losing ground. We have new allies, allies who have seldom spoken out in public on political issues, like the American Psychologists Association and the American Bar Association. We have allies in various US human rights organizations. We need to reach out to them for their support, people like the Rev. James A Forbes Jnr, and Breakthrough. I’m fired up.
This issue hits LGBT Foreign Service families particularly hard. Like their straight colleagues, many LGBT Foreign Service officers find the loves of their lives while serving their country overseas. And thus begins the difficult path of constantly choosing between their family and serving their country. Most end up serving only overseas, to the detriment of their ability to advance in a career that depends on making connections back in Washington, DC. And most end up, at the end of their careers spent serving the country they love, not being able to retire to the country they love because it means leaving the person they love behind.

Today I enjoyed lunch with Shirley Tan, Jay, the twins, Martha and Lin McDevitt-Pugh (Love Exiles founders, from the Netherlands), Becky Bransky, Legislative Director of Lesbian and Gay Task Force and Julie Kruse, Policy Director Immigration Equality. The Brown Bag was a perfect choice for our informal gathering. It was a well deserved lunch after an emotional meet-up with the witnesses who are testifying in tomorrows Senate Judiciary hearing. The LGBT Immigration cause has a stupendous team. The choice of witnesses is an exciting compliment.
Check out this video to learn about a new federal lawsuit from an unexpected source, a conservative! I hope this works, but gay rights groups feel this is a premature lawsuit. I say, let's go for it! I want full equality NOW!

Each of us did one or two things that we could do. And for that moment, we gave up feeling powerlessness, stopped being resigned and cynical. We know we will wake up again tomorrow as second class citiznens in the eyes of US federal law. And all we can do is take one more step. It is the only way we will win. It’s up to us.

On 23 March 2009, Lin and Martha McDevitt-Pugh of the Love Exiles Foundation had the opportunity to meet the Mercado-Tan family: two moms and their twin sons who live in Pacifica, California.

Mother Shirley Tan is an asylum seeker and was scheduled to be deported to a country she hasn’t visited in more than 20 years and where she nearly lost her life at age 14 when a cousin killed her mother and sister over an inheritance. This morning, April 23 2009, Melanie Nathan of Private Courts, who has...
"I am from California," says Toronto rally organizer Thom Vernon. "There's a group here in town called Love Exiles, which is actually an international organization for people who have left the US or been forced out because of the lack of relationship recognition."

Vernon also organized a November Prop 8 protest, where the turnout was around 150 people. With the decision now coming down, Vernon says that the impetus behind this rally was to lend support for the cause.

"In Canada we kind of have it good, but there's a lot of people in the States who are in situation that we were in," says Vernon. "Just because [these issues] are for all intents and purposes over in Canada, they're not over globally."

Roger Chin, organizing the rally in Vancouver, also organized a protest there in November.

"One of the things we found out was there are a
