The Uniting American Families Act (UAFA), which provides a path to citizenship for same-sex couples where one of the partners is not a legal resident, is coming under fire from religious groups saying the act threatens overall immigration reform and undermines traditional marriage
Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council is urging constituents to call their senators and vote against the bill:
Yesterday, while I was on the Hill meeting with a handful of senators, I learned that FRC’s noise on the immigration bill, S. 424 [UAFA], is having a considerable impact. After your calls and emails started pouring in, one leader told me the legislation, which would give a special resident status to same-sex partners, had become an embarrassing “spectacle.” Although the bill is still active, finding support for it will be even tougher now that FRC has shined the light on its r

Still, momentum is gathering and there are hopes that even if it is not done this year, immigration reform allowing LGBT couples equal rights will be a reality before long. The next step will be the outcome of President Obama's meetings and as to whether the Uniting American Families Act will be highlighted as a priority. But that doesn't mean we can sit back.

Should U.S. citizens be allowed to seek green cards for their same sex partners? That is what Vermont Sen. Patrick J. Leahy is proposing. And I think it's the right thing to do.
Immigrant advocates and labor groups are mounting a campaign to ask President Obama to keep his promise to bring immigration reform up in Congress. They are pushing for later this year. But any efforts to do so should include same-sex immigration benefits.

This issue hits LGBT Foreign Service families particularly hard. Like their straight colleagues, many LGBT Foreign Service officers find the loves of their lives while serving their country overseas. And thus begins the difficult path of constantly choosing between their family and serving their country. Most end up serving only overseas, to the detriment of their ability to advance in a career that depends on making connections back in Washington, DC. And most end up, at the end of their careers spent serving the country they love, not being able to retire to the country they love because it means leaving the person they love behind.

This fall I am returning to the U.S. with my German husband where he will apply for a spouse visa to stay permanently.
If we were the same gender, this wouldn't even be an option. An attack on marriage? I will never understand how these people think a gay couple's marriage will affect their own. It does not affect mine whatsoever.
What this is, is an attack on freedom and on love.Recently I have begun to see the possible benefits of having government not recognize marriage, but only civil partnerships, and to let marriage be only a religious rite. But I am sure the same people will also find some reason to be against this because it is simply about their hate, not because their marriages are at risk.

As a queer person, and as an immigrant into what is widely known as the “toughest country to get in to” in the world, I am constantly reminded of the inequality people face in this country who are involved in binational same-sex couples.I don’t have a Green Card, I am not allowed to work, I receive no government support, I am constant danger of my visa being revoked. As a student, I am forced to pay extortionate out of state tuition that is three times that of in-state tuition, and even if I were in a committed long term relationship, I would not be able to get a green card through my partner. I am actively discriminated against because of both my citizenship and my sexuality.

The Family Research Council in Washington is alerting the public regarding Senate Bill 424 introduced in Washington DC. Although this bill is called the “Uniting American Families Act of 2009”, FRC says this Bill is actually an attack upon marriage at the expense of U.S. taxpayers stating it is part of the movement to give same-sex partners special privileges. Senate Bill 424 will allow any gay or lesbian foreigner who declares themselves to be a permanent partner of an American to immigrate to the U.S. on the same basis as foreign spouses. And, like a married couple, these homosexuals would be eligible for “permanent resident status” under the current immigration law. The United States Senate Judiciary Committee will take up Senate Bill 424 at their Committee Meeting Wednesday, June 3rd at 10am. Both Wisconsin Senators Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold are members of this committee. You
