In advance of President Obama’s 5:45 remarks on extending limited benefits to gay federal workers, Director of Personnel Management John Berry spoke to the press and said….very little.
He seemed to be reading from a brief, prepared statement that recapped what we already know: OPM investigated which benefits could be extended to same-sex partners of federal employees that were not circumscribed by DOMA and it found two.

Listening to Obama talk about gay people here, he sounds like our ally — the man we knew during the presidential campaign. Hearing him speak so fondly of the gay community, and the rights we deserve, is reassuring. But we've come to learn we can't trust Obama's words alone. No action? No trust.

DOMA prohibits the federal government from granting same-sex couples benefits that, by law, flow from "marriage" or are granted to a "spouse" -- health benefits, for example. There are some benefits that law provides to "families" or "children" -- leave to care for a sick family member under the Family Medical Leave Act or long-term-care insurance. It's the second set that the president is moving today to grant.

You might have heard that President Obama plans on signing an order today requiring the government to offer health care and other benefits to partners of gay federal employees.
It's interesting that the federal government now recognizes that gay couples should be afforded the same priveleges as heterosexuals in one arena, but not in another: immigration....

The White House has been under increasing pressure since Obama’s inauguration to provide equal benefits to same sex couples under United States law. Recently Hillary Clinton reversed previous State Department policy by providing same sex partners of State Department employees with most of the benefits extended to different sex couples (including diplomatic passports for partners).
President Barack Obama is extending benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees. The question is: will Obama go further in extending benefits to same-sex couples? Of particular importance from an Immigration perspective: will the Uniting American Families Act be passed?
The feeling of many American Immigration Lawyers is that UAFA, or some bill similar to the UAFA, will eventually become law. The question is: when?
Hopefully for these families who are being kept
