Mr. President, with great respect, I am mentioning this during the holiday season because this time for many is fraught with sadness, fear and pain. Exiled Americans, who are with their spouses, cannot come home to spend Xmas with extended families and if they do, they have to leave spouses abroad. In entering such an international relationship, Judy and Karin also joined the ranks of binational LGBT couples who have lived out the difficulties associated with an immigration system that treats gay and lesbian couples differently ...While Judy, Karin, Tom and Aidan have understandably been consumed with their own living situations and the difficult decisions they must make, they are also taking the time to get involved and educate Americans, gay and straight, about the plight of LGBT binational couples.
Earlier this year at a Human Rights Campaign dinner, U.S. Rep. Michael Honda, speaking with U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler, both supporters of same sex binational couples legislation, named Judy Rickard and Karin Bogliolo as his educators on this issue. They urge members of the American LGBT community to contact their legislators and, most importantly, spread the word.

Gay-rights groups hopeful for inclusion, which might threaten bills' passage - Judy Rickard took an early retirement and a reduced pension so she could be assured of more time with her partner, a British citizen whose stays in the U.S. are limited to six months.
Rickard, 61, would have preferred to keep working at San Jose State University and sponsor her partner, Karin Bogliolo, for residency in the United States, just as heterosexual couples can. But U.S. law does not allow for that.

This is an issue facing many LGBT Foreign Service families. Our heterosexual colleagues can fall in love overseas and get immigration visas for their spouses. IN fact, because of their service, heterosexual Foreign Service Officers can get what is referred to as "expeditious naturalization" for their spouses, meaning the spouse does not have to live in the U.S. the requisite amount of time before being naturalized.
Not so for LGBT folks in the Foreign Service. We are still often not allowed to bring our partners back to the U.S. if we want to do a D.C. posting (which is necessary to advance your career) unless we can get them a student visa or, if possible, a work visa. I am embarrassed by my US passport anyway. From time to time Emi and I get a request to do an interview. Last week our immigration Laywer in New Jersey, Joyce Phipps (Highly Recommended) referred Emilio to a reporter looking to interview him regarding his Asylum case and the mess we went through. We've been trying to scramble time to talk to him, but working 7 days a week doesn't give us much time.
Recent events dealing with the US. The DOJ sent a letter asking for some documents regarding Emilio. Emi is still banned from re-entering the US, which is completely ridiculous to anyone who knows Emilio. It's like banning a Care Bear from the country.
Also I received an audit of my 2007 taxes, we know of one other couple (Nick & Mason) this happened to after moving to Canada. Coincidence or just more hell the US government enjoys putting us through, you decide. <
