President Obama, speaking to the nation’s largest gay rights organization, pledged tonight to end the law prohibiting openly gay and lesbian citizens from serving in the military.
“I will end ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’; that is my commitment,” said Obama, adding that he is also committed to ending the Defense of Marriage Act.Obama, speaking to nearly 3,000 gay and lesbian activists at a dinner-fundraiser hosted by the Human Rights Campaign, addressed the larger effort for equality. “I’m here with you in that fight,” he said. The president also said that there were “still laws to change and hearts to open.”
Obama’s address came amid growing concern in the LGBT community that he’s not acting fast enough on campaign pledges to more fully incorporate gays and lesbians into the fabric of American life.

I don't see the political will to make this happen, though. I'm also reminded as well of the quote frequently attributed to Franklin D. Roosevelt, who when pressed by labor and civil rights leaders to support their agenda, reportedly replied, "I agree with you, I want to do it, now make me do it."
I keep wondering, though: who is making Obama do the right thing? Where's the movement to create the political will to support a pro-LGBT agenda?A March on Washington could, theoretically, be a tool in building that movement, but the call for such a March this coming October 11 seems wildly ill-conceived (see this critique and this set of suggestions of what to do instead).

This might be one of those bills that ultimately goes nowhere or it may fundamentally change the course of both the gay marriage and immigration debates. Follow me below the fold for more on this bill. As it stands, this loving couple might be split forever if the wingnuts have their way..
The Advocate article mentions that three or four couples who have been split apart or who might be spit will likely testify Wednesday. Even if there are only a few cases, that is still a few cases too many. This is not gay marriage, but it is an important right that is denied to gay and lesbian couples.
One potentially strong argument that our opponents will make is "what about fraud?" In other words, unmarried people could sponsor someone of the same gender just by claiming to be gay/lesbian and claiming to be in love. UAFA provides for the same penalties as the rest of the
