A fund-raiser has been planned on Sunday, February 28 to support Immigration Equality, an organization that is seeking to get the U.S. HIV ban repealed this year, and is working hard to get legislation passed that will allow a U.S. citizen to sponsor his/her same-sex partner for permanent residency in the United States.

No Repeal of DOMA Expected Until 2011 (If Then)

As a presidential candidate, Barack Obama did not support marriage equality, but he did support the repeal of the so-called "Defense of Marriage" Act (DOMA), a 1996 law that bans any federal recognition of gay and lesbian families and allows states to deny marriage rights even to same-sex couples who have been legally wed in their home states. Obama also spoke of supporting some sort of legal provision to allow same-sex families access to civil unions on a national level.
Pro-family parity lawmakers have a bill that would strike down DOMA. They call it the Respect for Marriage Act; if passed into law, the bill would protect marriage--all marriages, that is--by granting federal-level recognition to families, gay or straight, who had been married in any jurisdiction.
Some family equality advocates do not support the bill because it applies only to married couple

How I define an LGBT issue (Open Left)

In all the LGBT community dialogue in which I participate and observe, immigration reform is never one of the "big" issues at the federal level. Usually those most talked about include hate crimes, ENDA, DOMA, DADT, and HIV/AIDS policy.
Why is that? I think it's because with the exception of HIV/AIDS, all of those policies specifically discriminate against LGBT people. Federal employment non-discrimination laws, for example, protect lots of categories of people- race, religion, sex, and so forth. Sexual orientation and gender identity are specifically excluded, so this is an "LGBT" issue.
Contrast that with immigration reform. After the Uniting American Families Act provision wasn't included in the bill as introduced (which would allow same-sex binational couples to have the same access to immigration benefits that heterosexual couples do), I can't tell you how many p

The Sunday Star-Times (via Stuff) reported that the longtime aide to former Prime Minister Helen Clark, Heather Simpson, has married her partner, Sue Veart, in a civil union at their home in Wellington. Clark, whose government created civil unions, did not attend.
The article talked about Simpsons political power during Clark’s Labour-led government, before moving on to how Simpson had her “arm twisted” to work for Clark at the United Nations in New York City. Apparently Veart recently left her job so she could join Simpson.
The article said: “One acquaintance said she believed the civil union would make it easier for Veart to live in the US.” Personally, I doubt that’s true, given Simpson’s well-known political nous. She would know that no foreign or domestic legal recognition of same-sex relationships—whether civil unions or marriages—are recognised by the US

“While we salute and acknowledge the heroic members of Congress who have worked tirelessly on our behalf, far too many have dragged their feet on basic matters of fairness and equality that have lingered too long and hurt too many LGBT people and their families. Yes, there are many challenges facing this Congress and this President. But LGBT people often face additional hardship protecting their families, their loved ones and their jobs, and too few in Congress are willing to champion these issues of basic fairness. Now, more than ever, members of the LGBT community need to make their voices heard face-to-face and in the districts where they live.”

Here and here, you can read statements by both the National Hispanic Christian Leader's Conference and the US Conference of Catholic Bishops both indicating their strong rejection of anything that includes provisions for LGBTQ couples and families with regard to immigration. The Uniting American Families Act would allow same sex couples the same rights as opposite sex couples in terms of immigration rights. But I guess that is just too threatening for both groups. There will be too many queer folk and queer families in the US that the institution of marriage will crumble, and that could possibly mean the end of the world.
The US Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Hispanic Christian Leader's Conference can both KISS MY ASS!

The creative juices are flowing. This one is courtesy a commentator using ‘allegedly queer’ as an insult for Yasmin Nair after her critique of Uniting American Families Act over at Queer Cents. Now, many bi-national same-sex couples took offense to the post given their own personal struggles. Few really saw why Ms. Nair was raising such an issue with UAFA. It’s a piece of legislation that serves a privileged few, keeps marriage and family as central to citizenship, and might detract from efforts at comprehensive immigration reform.
My own views on gay immigration politics are summed up here:
The movement for immigration reform–permeated in heterosexuality–has to incorporate queer voices and politics, and not just from ‘Immigration Equality‘, which mainly advocates for gay American citizens without really questioning the problems with the conception of ‘citizenship’ — a const

As New Hampshire is poised to become the sixth state to approve same-sex marriage, experts in both camps agree the law would give few unique legal rights to gay and lesbian couples that they lacked with civil unions alone.
The federal Defense of Marriage Act of 1996 sees to that, blocking 1,138 marital rights and protections for homosexual couples even in states where same-sex marriage is legal.

The suit notes Congress adopted DOMA before same-sex marriage was legal in any state and claims it violates the equal protection clause under the Constitution. They advised supporters on their Web site that the lawsuit route could succeed before DOMA is ever ta

Whether it’s the recent progress of marriage equality, the pressure of selecting a fair-minded U.S. Supreme Court nominee, or the long-awaited overturn of the military’s gay ban, LGBT issues have become unavoidable for President Obama, says a must-read article in The New York Times on Thursday.
