The State of Maine’s rejection of marriage equality at the ballot box yesterday is being heeded as a call for federal LGBT rights by activists and organizations around the US, including Out4Immigration.

The Maine vote was 53% in support of taking away civil marriage rights granted to gays and lesbians by approval of the state legislature and signed into law by the state’s governor 6 months ago. 47% of voters supported marriage equality. “Subjecting minority rights to majority vote repeatedly denies equality to LGBT families,” said Mickey Lim, vice president and co-founder of Out4Immigration, a grassroots organization that works closely with same-sex marriage groups for recognition of same-sex binational couple rights tied to federal immigration policies.

Out4Immigation advocates for same-sex binational couples, relationships in which one partner is American and
As one of 18,000 legally wed same-sex couples in California, Brad Levenson and Tony Sears file state income taxes as a married couple.

But they file their federal taxes as single individuals, paying hundreds of dollars more each year. That's because a law called the Defense of Marriage Act bars federal agencies from recognizing gay marriages.

Backers of gay rights are pushing to repeal the law, buoyed by a growing acceptance of same-sex marriage, which is now legal in six states.

But Republicans on Capitol Hill are ready to fight....
A carefully planned test challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the federal statute that bans federal recognition of same sex marriages, is taking shape in Massachusetts, one of a growing number of states to recognize marriage equality. The case could have important immigration implications because DOMA bars conferring immigration benefits to these couples. If the plaintiffs are successful, it would pave the way for US citizens to petition for green cards for their same-sex spouses.

While the high-profile, Ted Olson- and David Boies-managed legal fight against California's Proposition 8 captures headlines, a carefully planned case quietly underway in Massachusetts federal court could be the gay marriage test with the greatest national impact....
On February 8th, 2009, I posted my feelings that “It’s Time For A National LGBT Leader” to step forth, and then again on May 30th, I posted a comment about the LGBT Community and that “Now Is The Time” for us to organize and put pressure on those who promised us the rights we deserve and are entitled.

In both my previous posts, I stressed the need to act quickly and if we miss this opportunity we have only ourselves to blame.

Yesterday I received an email, it was the day for emails, from the Ohio LGBT Caucus, addressing similar issues and their perception on the urgency of this issue.
Having a democratic President essentially ignore the fact the we too are people with children and we are being discriminated against through legislation… is just unbelievable to me. Look President Obama this is me Melanie and my baby girl!

This token offering is just that; it serves only to highlight what he has NOT done for all the LGBT community and a feeble attempt to avert our attention from the basic rights we deserve and are not pertaining to every level of our de facto existence. I do not...
You might have heard that President Obama plans on signing an order today requiring the government to offer health care and other benefits to partners of gay federal employees.

It's interesting that the federal government now recognizes that gay couples should be afforded the same priveleges as heterosexuals in one arena, but not in another: immigration....
The White House has been under increasing pressure since Obama’s inauguration to provide equal benefits to same sex couples under United States law. Recently Hillary Clinton reversed previous State Department policy by providing same sex partners of State Department employees with most of the benefits extended to different sex couples (including diplomatic passports for partners).

President Barack Obama is extending benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees. The question is: will Obama go further in extending benefits to same-sex couples? Of particular importance from an Immigration perspective: will the Uniting American Families Act be passed?

The feeling of many American Immigration Lawyers is that UAFA, or some bill similar to the UAFA, will eventually become law. The question is: when?

Hopefully for these families who are being kept
Check out this video to learn about a new federal lawsuit from an unexpected source, a conservative! I hope this works, but gay rights groups feel this is a premature lawsuit. I say, let's go for it! I want full equality NOW!
