Illinois Congressman Mike Quigley was among those on hand at a forum at the Center on Halsted in Chicago. LGBT immigration reform was the topic of conversation for some 50 activists who gathered at the Center on Halsted on Chicago on Tuesday, Feb. 16, for a discussion forum sponsored by the National Immigrant Justice Center and the Strength in Unity Coalition. In addition to addressing the needs of gay and lesbian couples who are unable to sponsor their partners for citizenship while heterosexual couples can, forum panelists and attendees spoke on myriad concerns at the intersection of immigrant and LGBT rights.

Short Conversation with the President about UAFA

I told him of a conversation I had just had with the President: "So I said, 'Will you support the Uniting American Families Act — Jerry Nadler's bill?' He said, 'I haven't read it yet.' I said, 'Please take a look at it,' to which he said, 'I will.'"
Frank asked, "Who said this to you?" I replied, "The President of the United States."
Now I realize that getting the President to tell you that he'll look at a bill is not the most earth-shaking development, but if John Aravosis thinks I am going to pass up a chance to get a few moments of input to the most powerful man in the world, he can kiss my you-know-what.
After I chatted with Frank, I walked over to gay White House staffer Brian Bond, to whom I described my conversation with the President. Now there were a couple of hundred people at the reception, and dozens of them spoke with the President.

There was some moving testimony by families forced by the current law to choose between their country and their loved one. Unfortunately, there were also reminders of anti-gay bias in high places. Ranking Republican committee member Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), in addition to the usual right-wing attacks against gay families in the name of defending The Family, trotted out the charge that passing the bill would lead to fraud by “providing an additional avenue for abuse of the marriage preference for immigration into our country.”
The bill's author, Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), refuted the fraud canard by pointing out that same-sex couples would face the same burden of proof as opposite-sex couples in demonstrating that they are in committed relationships, and would “face the same penalties of fraud.”
