News that the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on Wednesday learning about the obstacles faced by lesbian and gay couples under U.S. immigration law. Unlike straight couples, gay partners cannot sponsor each other for immigration, and under DOMA, have no access to the rights provided bi-national straight couples. Under the law, our families do not exist.
Legislation Is Needed To Bring U.S. In-Line With Other Democracies

WASHINGTON - June 2 - The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing tomorrow on a bill that modifies U.S. immigration law to provide equal protection to same-sex life partners of citizens and permanent legal residents. As part of the hearing, entitled "The United American Families Act: Addressing Inequality in Federal Immigration Law," the American Civil Liberties Union sent a letter to lawmakers urging the Committee to pass S. 424, "Uniting American Families Act."
Inside, Looking Out will be covering the UAFA hearings so check back for regular updates.
This news is huge for LGBT advocates working on the issue of immigration; for anyone concerned with the issues of immigration. According to the Washington Blade, Congress will start hearings on the UAFA next week, in which LGBT advocates will surely see as a chance to revise U.S. immigration policy with an eye toward equality.

Equality. Such a lovely word. So, I ask you to urge Congress to help pass the Uniting American Families Act by signing the petition here on Change.org. Let's make U.S. immigration laws a little more just for LGBT couples.
I am leaving tomorrow for D.C. to attend the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing convened by Senator Leahy. I will be blogging on a daily basis, albeit cryptic (perhaps.) I believe and of course stand to be corrected that the Republican members of the committee are only obligated to be present for 15 minutes. I don’t get it; if witnesses are there providing testimony, so that a
Steve Ralls, a spokesperson for Immigration Equality, said the committee's witness list would be posted later this week.

This news is huge for LGBT advocates working on the issue of immigration. The Uniting American Families Act (UAFA for short) was introduced earlier this year in Congress by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (in the U.S. House) and Sen. Patrick Leahy (in the U.S. Senate). The UAFA will eliminate discrimination in U.S. immigration laws by permitting same-sex partners of U.S. citizens to obtain permanent resident status. Kind of like how straight people who marry someone from outside the country can obtain legal resident status for their partner.
Shirley Tan, a California mom who was nearly deported in April because her same-sex partner could not legally sponsor her for citizenship, has been invited to testify by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) in the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) hearings starting June 3. If passed, UAFA would extend same-sex couples the same immigration rights enjoyed by married couples, creating a legal path to citizenship.

Tan’s partner Jay Mercado and their twin sons will make the trip to Washington with their lawyer Melanie Nathan. From Nathan’s blog.

Nathan will have extensive coverage the hearings on her blog as will we at inlookout.com. There will also be a live webcast of the hearings starting at 10am EST on June 3.
On June 03, 2009, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) and for the first time the question of Equality in our Immigration Law will flare in the face of this Country and the World.

This is a giant step forward for the entire LGBT community in the USA and all over the World. Even though you may not be affected at this time, we are all a heartbeat away from falling in love with someone from a foreign country and here in the USA right now, as it stands if you fall in love with a non citizen or non- legal resident, you will be compelled at some point to choose between your lover or your land. If faced with this you will stand to lose
Senator Patrick Leahy will convene hearings on the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) starting June 3. UAFA will eliminate immigration discrimination against bi-national same-sex couples by providing a legal path to citizenship.

At a recent townhall meeting I asked Congresswoman Jackie Speier (CA-12)—who represents my district—about immigration reform as it pertains to bi-national same-sex couples...
