You may know that the federal government plans to count everybody in America in this year, but the once-a-decade Census has changed to more accurately count LGBT families in 2010, and that’s a good thing.
GayPolitics sat down with two people deeply involved in making sure the LGBT community understands what has changed and why it’s important that our community participates as fully as possible.
Che Ruddell-Tabisola is the manager for National LGBT Partnerships and coordinator of Our Families Count, a new effort by the U.S. Census Bureau to engage the LGBT community. Bob Witeck is CEO and co-founder of Witeck-Combs Communications. He is serving as media coordinator for Our Families Count and is working with Che to promote the effort nationwide.

In all the LGBT community dialogue in which I participate and observe, immigration reform is never one of the "big" issues at the federal level. Usually those most talked about include hate crimes, ENDA, DOMA, DADT, and HIV/AIDS policy.
Why is that? I think it's because with the exception of HIV/AIDS, all of those policies specifically discriminate against LGBT people. Federal employment non-discrimination laws, for example, protect lots of categories of people- race, religion, sex, and so forth. Sexual orientation and gender identity are specifically excluded, so this is an "LGBT" issue.
Contrast that with immigration reform. After the Uniting American Families Act provision wasn't included in the bill as introduced (which would allow same-sex binational couples to have the same access to immigration benefits that heterosexual couples do), I can't tell you how many p

Going along to get along is not working anymore. Why should LGBT activists be there for immigration folks if they aren't there for us? Big surprise. Just like ENDA in 2007, we are expected to press on while others are left behind. This bill is now worthless for LGBT people.

GLBT equality advocates are looking to see that gay and lesbian families are represented on the 2010 U.S. Census .
When we hear this tried crap about Obama being too busy for gay rights, and how he's got bigger things to deal with, it helps, but remains unfortunate, that we have stories like Genesio "Junior" Oliveira and Joe Smith (a fake name) — two men forced to leave the United States because this nation endorses discrimination.
Wasn't assistant attorney general Tom Perez — Obama's "civil rights czar" — just saying how he was going to stick up for queers? Yes, he was: "We must fight for fairness and basic equality for our LGBT brothers and sisters who so frequently are being left in the shadows [and to] ensure that there's a level playing field in which our LGBT brothers and sisters are judged by the content of their character."
So how come it's Perez's own Justice Department that just let expire an asylum claim from Oliveira, who was raped in his native Brazil and fled

Today President Obama confirmed some of my fears in so far as they relate to Uniting American Families Act - UAFA and comprehensive immigration reform (CIR).
“I’ve got a lot on my plate and it’s very important for us to sequence these big initiatives so they don’t crash at the same time,” Obama said when asked by a reporter about the prospects for immigration reform.”
I am calling on Immigration Equality to re strategize and change their course back to the original focus. The focus on UAFA, what it represents to binationals currently in exile or in hiding, its use to raise funds for IE has veered off ...

I have been an ardent critic of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand ever since the trifecta of Gov. David Paterson, Sen. Chuck Schumer and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton plucked Gillibrand from the relative obscurity of New York’s 20th congressional district and anointed her to replace Clinton in the senate.
Gillibrand is a conservative Democratic, an outspoken advocate of gun ownership who enjoys a perfect 100% NRA rating. She believes gay marriage equality should be left to the states to decide and, voted against legislation to grant same-sex partners of U.S. citizens the same immigration status of married couples. Needless to say, Gillibrand’s politics are antithetical to mine.

Service Members Legal Defense Network - The gay marriage battle is far from over, though the gay community is making progress, state by state. There are numerous proposed reforms being discussed, debated and legislated across the country. The issue gaining the most traction, in terms of widespread support, is the elimination of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ in the military. Even conservatives have changed their tune in recent months.
The battle for gay rights is being fought on several fronts: marriage, adoption, immigration, workplace and military. There is no doubt in my mind that sustained effort will decrease social exclusion and discrimination in many areas, because progress has already been made. It wasn’t as difficult for me to ‘come out’ as it was for generations prior to me. I hope that ongoing effort to gain legal recognition and acceptance will pave the way for future
