A new poll released by the University of Washington shows a surge in support for marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples.
We need to make sure that voters in Washington understand that until Washington State issues marriage licenses to its gay and lesbian citizens we will not be able to make progress towards these important federal protections such as social security, immigration rights, and equal treatment under the IRS tax code."

A resolution supporting the federal bill that would allow gay U.S. citizens to sponsor their partners for a visa passed the California Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday and now heads to the Senate floor for a vote.
Our cover story this week, "Worlds Apart," tells the story of three Bay Area couples whose lives would be changed by the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA), a federal bill that allows "permanent partners" to be treated the same as straight spouses in immigration matters. Currently, gay couples have no legal pathway to sponsor their foreign partners to stay in the country.
While the federal UAFA bill is on hold while lawmakers decide whether to include it in the comprehensive immigration reform, California legislators such as Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) introduced a resolution last year urging the U.S. Congress to pass the s

Catholic Bishops wont support immigration bill for gay families (KPCC Public Radio)

One of the most vocal supporters of immigration reform has been the Catholic Church. But the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops will not support an immigration bill that includes protections for gay and lesbian couples. KPCC’s Washington Correspondent Kitty Felde has the story.
Kitty Felde: Congressman Mike Honda has introduced a bill to expand the definition of immigrant families eligible to stay in the U.S. Under Honda’s bill, a widow who’s not a legal U.S. resident could stay if her husband dies. Same for widowers and orphans.
But Honda’s written in a provision so someone who’s gay can sponsor a same-sex partner for legal U.S. residency. Honda, who’s a Democrat from San Jose, says for him, including same-sex partners is a civil rights issue.

There's been a lot of attention paid of late to the issues of marriage equality and Don't Ask Don't Tell -- and that's all to the good. However, there's legislation related to another important GLBT rights issue percolating in Washington that could really use our help. Passage of the Uniting American Families Act (S. 424, H.R. 1024), would change the lives of many GLBT people whose families are being torn apart under current immigration laws. GLBT families are being split because their spouses and children are not considered part of a legal family, and thus are not allowed into the United States under current immigration policy. MORE...
FRC Perkins claims fundies turning the tide on support for UAFA

If you had any doubt that the professional Christian set isn't hard at work stirring up the Base over any and all legislation that is remotely pro-LGBT, look at Tony Perkins of the Family Research Counsel. He is cooing with glee that bible-beaters are picking up the phones and bombarding Congress over the United American Families Act. What the tactics prove is that they have to move the argument in any way they can to marriage equality and shooting it down because the polls are still on their side for now. You will see it come up over and over again as part of the slippery slope meme. All these people have are three obvious, crappy arguments....
Julian Bond, NAACP chairman, testified yesterday in support of the Uniting American Families Act before the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill would give gay and lesbian U.S. citizens and permanent residents the right to sponsor their foreign-born permanent partners for legal residency in the U.S. The act does not provide any other benefits and all other immigration requirements must be met.
"It is because the NAACP supports the civil rights protections of all people, and is opposed to discrimination based on any criteria, that we support inclusion of the principles inherent in Uniting American Families Act in any comprehensive immigration reform," said Bond.

Speaking from Mexico, the former mayor of San Angelo, TX, Joseph W. Lown, said earlier this week he supports the Uniting American Families Act that would allow American citizens and legal immigrants to seek residency in the United States for their same-sex partners, the same as straight American citizens can now petition for foreign-born husbands and wives.
Lown resigned as San Angelo’s mayor after serving six years in that position and moved to Mexico so he and his long-term partner could legally remain together.

As a queer person, and as an immigrant into what is widely known as the “toughest country to get in to” in the world, I am constantly reminded of the inequality people face in this country who are involved in binational same-sex couples.I don’t have a Green Card, I am not allowed to work, I receive no government support, I am constant danger of my visa being revoked. As a student, I am forced to pay extortionate out of state tuition that is three times that of in-state tuition, and even if I were in a committed long term relationship, I would not be able to get a green card through my partner. I am actively discriminated against because of both my citizenship and my sexuality.

I hope you are doing well. Please accept my apologies for this mass email. Same sex binational couple's immigration is one of the many issues that I have been working on for the past 10 years.... it will be 10 years to the day on 31st of May when I was finally able to land in the US of A to be with my husband after spending 4 years apart in 2 different countries.
This year, I feel that we are finally at a tipping point and the bill is finally getting some traction. Sen Leahy is going to be holding a hearing about this bill next week and Rep Mike Honda is going to reintroduce the Reunite Families Act which will include language of UAFA in the bill. We are also hoping that when Comprehensive Immigration Reform is introduced next month, LGBT Families will be included u
