Internationally acclaimed performance artist Tim Miller will give a performance and lecture Oct. 2 at Texas Tech.

This feels like the strongest work I have ever done. Alistair’s visa runs out next year, and I will be facing the likelihood that I will be forced to leave the U.S. to seek immigration asylum in the UK because of homophobic U.S. immigration laws that deny gay couples the immigration rights that all heterosexual married couples are afforded.

As you can imagine, this gives a particular urgency to my current performance work on the subject. Considering gay folks in Texas are denied all these basic state rights that currently only gay people in California and Massachusetts have, they should be aware of this injustice in our country....
So he did — moving to New York City and creating solo pieces that addressed touchy LGBT issues, such as HIV/AIDS and marriage and immigration equality. He also launched P.S. 122, in New York, and Highways, in Santa Monica — performance ... he 50-year-old queer performance artist, who brings his latest work, Lay of the Land, to Cleveland’s Ingenuity Festival next week, voted for Obama in the last election. And so he’s not thrilled with the recent actions of the president (and so-called “fierce advocate” for LGBT rights).

“We’ve been thrown under the bus and run over a thousand times since January,” Miller tells me from Los Angeles, where he’s preparing for his Northeast Ohio performances.

And he’s just getting started.

For example, it can be argued that the exclusion of LGBT couples from immigration sponsoring does not benefit straight couples or society in any way. This is just one of the many points we have to raise with the more conservative ...
