In the previous parts of this series (available here and here ), we described the history of the fight over same-sex marriage in the United States and mapped out the current national landscape, which features full marriage equality rights in some states, quasi-marriage rights in other states, and absolute bans on same-sex marriage in a large majority of states.
Because of these anti-recognition provisions, same-sex partners who validly marry in Massachusetts, or in another state or foreign country that permits such unions, will not have their marriages recognized by most other states. Thus, by moving or even traveling, a same-sex couple can effectively lose their marital status while in other states. That same couple will also be denied recognition for any federal law purpose such as immigration, Social Security benefits, or tax status.

Former president Bill Clinton said in a conference for progressive students that he supports gay and lesbian couples' right to marry.
"Yeah," Clinton said when asked after a speech at the Campus Progress National Conference, according to The Nation . "I personally support people doing what they want to do. I think it's wrong for someone to stop someone else from doing that [same-sex marriage]."
In a 2000 interview with The Advocate, Clinton said that "people who have a relationship ought to be able to call it whatever they want. And insofar as it's sanctified by a religious ceremony, that's up to the churches involved."
He added about the fight in Congress over DOMA, "I think what happened in the Congress was that a lot of people who didn't want to be antigay didn't feel that they should be saying that as a matter of law, without regard to what various ch

Internationally acclaimed performance artist Tim Miller will give a performance and lecture Oct. 2 at Texas Tech.
This feels like the strongest work I have ever done. Alistair’s visa runs out next year, and I will be facing the likelihood that I will be forced to leave the U.S. to seek immigration asylum in the UK because of homophobic U.S. immigration laws that deny gay couples the immigration rights that all heterosexual married couples are afforded.
As you can imagine, this gives a particular urgency to my current performance work on the subject. Considering gay folks in Texas are denied all these basic state rights that currently only gay people in California and Massachusetts have, they should be aware of this injustice in our country....

It is Time to March (Gay City News)

The March on Washington has reached critical mass and it will play to a national audience on October 11 — National Coming Out Day, the traditional day for gay Washington protests. On that day in 1987, as the AIDS epidemic was treated with a stony indifference by President Ronald Reagan, the LGBT community mobilized a major demonstration around the slogan “Silence = Death.”
By now, the march is a sure thing, and those of us who don’t participate run the risk of making it a failure. Those of us who do march are likely to have one of the happiest moments in our lives. It has been my pleasure to march on Washington nearly a dozen times. Had I not been overseas, I would have been in Washington in 1963 when Martin Luther King articulated his dream. Now is the time we carry equality one step further and demand the full inclusion of the LGBT community in the nation’s civil rights l

I am considering a career move to Masachusetts US, looking to move there with my partner of 13 years. Although Massachusetts permits gay marriage, federal immigration laws do not recognise same sex relationships of any type. This is the first time in my life that I have faced difficulties (prejudice quite frankly) as a result of my sexual orientation. Although the company that I work for is fully supportive in moving both me and my partner, there are limitations regarding the visa that my partner can obtain - essentially limited to a 6 month visitor visa.
I find it incredible in 2009 that we are denied immigration equality on the basis of sexual orientation - it is a disgraceful prejudice.

In a letter sent Thursday to Attorney General Eric Holder, Kerry said Immigration Judge Francis Cramer found Oliveira's testimony to be credible and his fear of living in Brazil genuine. However the judge denied the claim, saying the man "was never physically harmed" by the rape, the letter said.
Kerry called the ruling "outrageous."
"Tim and Junior have played by the rules since day one," Kerry said. "Junior's asylum claim is a legitimate one and has been recognized as such."
While Brazilians are generally more tolerant of homosexual conduct than their neighbors in Spanish-speaking Latin America, the country remains something of a paradox.
Judges have granted foreign partners in gay relationships the right to residence and have authorized civil unions that bestow many of the same benefits of marriage to gay couples, but many segments of society remain openly hostile to homo

"Their relationship isn't being treated equally, and at the end of the day, hardworking American citizens who play by the rules are forced to choose between their country and the people they love," Tiven said.
Kerry has co-sponsored a bill that would allow gays and lesbians from other countries to become legal residents based on their permanent relationships with U.S. citizens in the same manner as heterosexual couples.
Coco said he and Oliveira would eventually do whatever it takes to be together.
"We will be, even if it does mean I leave the U.S., but we're hoping that will not be the only option," he said.
