In politics, love can be problematic. (Just ask South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford.) Add being openly gay to the mix and problems can become scandals. But something odd happened when the mayor of San Angelo, Texas followed his gay heart.
J. W. Lown absconded to Mexico to be with his same-sex lover, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. But where one would have expected to find fiery outrage, there was a surprsing calm, according to Texas Monthly....

I look at the many protests where people are SCREAMING idiotic comments or just whitenoise in townhalls, or marching in Tea Party anti-tax parades, and the meanness, ignorance, mob-like, and ugliness shines America’s pride. This stuff is sick, the real psychological lunatic sickness. The sickness that wants to mask bigotry in anti-gay / immigration talking points and a lust for hellraising and violence in fake hanging effigies and the vague notion of political protest....

And, for 30,000 people who have had the fortune of falling in love, internationally, with the fall of DOMA, will come the right for the US citizen for spousal sponsoring. Let me be clear: US immigration rules regarding legally married same sex partners is wrong. The laws must be changed so that legally married spouses in same sex marriages can immigrate to the United States. I’m all for this. I would prefer that this be accomplished legislatively, but I’m convinced that within five years the courts will mandate it. DOMA is clearly unconstitutional and should, with the right Supreme Court justices, be turned over in the blink of an eye.
What this really needs is a married same sex couple with a proven track record of following the law. John and Damien are not the right pair. Overstaying a visa, without permission is breaking the law. I’m willing to bet that neither John nor

U.S. lawmakers on Thursday unveiled legislation to help reunite families split apart for years by the creaky immigration system – including, controversially, same-sex partners.
Representative Mike Honda, who heads the caucus of Asian Americans, said that some families are split apart for decades due to the severe backlog in U.S. immigrant visas for relatives of some nationalities.“The benefits cannot be overstated,” Honda said. “American workers with families by their side are happier, healthier and more able to succeed than those distanced from loved ones for years on end.”
The legislation, of which a similar version has been introduced in the Senate, would make family reunification a priority in immigration and raise the number of potential visas by rolling over those unused in previous years.

A man accused of advising straight immigrants to claim homosexuality - and potential persecution in their home countries - when they applied for asylum has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit immigration fraud.
Steven Mahoney entered his plea Tuesday in federal court in Seattle.
The U.S. attorney's office says the 41-year-old Mahoney ran Mahoney and Associates in Kent, and held himself out as an expert in immigration affairs. They say he made money by advising immigrants on how to stay in the U.S. Between late 1998 and mid 2007, Mahoney admits he filed as many as 99 false immigration documents and was paid between $1,000 and $4,000 for each.
Mahoney faces a maximum five years in prison when he is sentenced Aug. 21.

Uniting American Families Act (UAFA S 424 HR 1024)

In addition to the old plan of asking everyone to call or write their Senators and Representative to co-sponsor the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA, S. 424 or H.R. 1024), Immigration Equality is adding a second tactic -- asking everyone to spread the message that UAFA has to be part of any comprehensive immigration reform bill.
Fact: it is quite likely that there will be a comprehensive immigration reform bill this year. As a result we are now on a two track strategy, lobbying for UAFA as a freestanding bill and UAFA as part of comprehensive reform. To not try to be part of the comprehensive bill would be foolish because if it passes it is quite likely that Congress will not want to deal with any immigration issue again for many years. They will say immigration is now fixed, regardless of the facts.
